The evidence
What the tradition says, and what we do not claim
People ask for the science behind iris reading. This page gives the honest answer: a long tradition, thin evidence, and a reading offered for self-reflection.
What the tradition says
- Iridology maps regions of the iris to body systems on a chart, and reads fibre density, pigment and lacunae in each region as signs of that system's constitution.
- Behavioural iridology (the Rayid method) reads the same iris for structure rather than health, naming four types: Jewel, Flower, Stream and Shaker.
- Both are traditions built on practitioner observation over more than a century, not on controlled trials.
What the published research found
The controlled studies that exist do not support iridology as a diagnostic method. A 2005 systematic review in the Journal of General Internal Medicine examined the available trials and concluded that iridology was not a useful diagnostic tool. Later work in other countries has reported more favourable findings, but nothing that changes that conclusion.
For behavioural iridology, we know of no peer-reviewed trial that validates the four types against an established personality measure. Where we cannot point to a study, we do not cite one.
What the model does reliably is describe the patterns that are visible in your two photos, and describe them the same way each time. Whether those patterns say anything about your organs or your character is an open question, and we treat it as one.
What we do not claim
- A reading does not diagnose, treat or predict any disease.
- A reading is not a substitute for a blood test, a scan or a doctor.
- A personality reading is a reflective lens, like a well-made personality quiz, not a validated psychological test.
- We do not claim any alliance with a research body or non-profit, and we do not take donations.
How the reading is actually produced is on the methodology page. The four personality types are described on the iris types page.
